ENT and Urology Surgery

Theo is having a bilateral Orchiopexy for retractile testis AND bilateral myringotomy and ventilation tubes, an adneiodectomy, and a tonsillectomy on Thursday. So, of course, on Monday (July 11th), Theo had a COVID test. He has had so many of these that he knew exactly what was happening when we pulled into the parking garage below the hospital. Poor kid. Luckily, it was negative so we were given the green light to move forward for surgery.

That afternoon Theo had PT.

Theo only had two seizures today.

On Tuesday, July 12th, Theo went to OT and the cleaning ladies came! They only come once a month and I love coming home to a nice clean house!

I bought a special wheelchair backpack for Theo. It clips to the handlebars and is easily accessible. Since it hangs on the handlebars it leaves the basket open for other items. It's great! Thanks Target!

Theo had three seizures today.

On Wednesday, July 13th, Theo had PT, Feeding therapy, and a Zoom with his Dietitian. I also received a call from the ENT nurse letting me know that Theo's check in time for surgery was 6:00 AM. Ugh! If we have to be at the hospital at 6:00 AM that means we need to leave the house at 4:00 AM, which means were are waking up at 3:00 AM. It's just too early. 4:00 AM wake up time I can do, but 3:00 AM is just too early. After therapy we packed up the car and headed down to Peoria to stay the night at a hotel.

[My flowers will be okay for the next few days, right?]

We got up early the next morning (July 14th), packed up, and headed to the hospital. Usually these procedures are outpatient, but because of Theo's medical history they decided ahead of time that we would stay in the hospital for one night.

Theo got upset when we started getting him undressed. He grabbed my hand and put it on his cheek. Such a sweet boy!

We got him dressed in his gown and turned on some videos for him to watch while we talked to the doctors and nurses.

Dr. Doh with Urology said he would go first and perform the bilateral Orchiopexy for retractile testis. This would involve an incision in Theo's abdomen and then an incision across the front of his scrotum. They would then go in, bring down the testicles, and stitch them to the bottom of the scrotum. After Dr. Noh is done Dr. Gootee will go in a perform a bilateral myringotomy and ventilation tubes, an adneiodectomy, and a tonsillectomy.

After we spoke to the doctors and the anesthesiologist, the nurse came back in and wheeled Theo to the OR. Josh and I went and grabbed some breakfast and then headed to the waiting room. A couple hours later we were told that Dr Noh was done and he wanted to take to us in the conference room. He said Theo did well and that his surgery was successful. He told us to keep Theo on a regimen of Tylenol and Midol and not to worry if we see swelling and bruising. If we have any questions or concerns we can call him though. We will have a followup in 6 months.

We then headed back to the waiting room to wait for Dr Gootee to finish his procedures. An hour or so later we were taken back to the conference room to talk to the ENT. He said Theo did great and they were able to successfully put in the tubes and remove the adenoids and tonsils. He said kids with g-tubes usually do well with recovery since they are able to stay hydrated without drinking, which is hard when your throat is sore. He recommended keeping a humidifier near Theo and getting a tiny squirt bottle to spray water in his mouth (if he'll allow us to). We will follow up with Dr Gootee in 1-3 months.

A hour later I was called to recovery where I found Theo sleeping the day away. We were then transported up to a room in the PICU (intermediate level).

Theo didn't need to be on oxygen for too long, but they hooked it up to a humidifier to help keep the inside of his nose and mouthn wet.

Theo slept A LOT that first day, which was great. We were able to keep him hydrated and he needed to rest.

Josh stayed the night with Theo at the hospital while I went back to the hotel to sleep.

Theo had three seizures today.

The next morning, July 15th, I headed back to the hospital and found Josh and Theo right where I left them. The PICU doctors came in shortly after I arrived and evaluated Theo. They were very happy with how well he was doing and said they would send in the orders for his discharge. An hour later we were discharged and made the two hour trip home. Theo struggled in the car (which I guess is the new norm), but once we got home he took a LONG nap.

While Theo was sleeping I went and got my allergy shot, picked up some Euros from the bank, and then went to get my new iPhone from Verizon. It's been four years since I upgraded my phone, so I guess it was time.

Theo had six seizures today.

Our next day (Saturday, July 16th) was very relaxing. We hung out at home, watched the Tour de France, and Theo rested.

Theo had two seizures today.

Our Sunday, July 17th, was the same as Saturday - lots of resting and hydrating. Theo's bruising is spreading around his little boy parts, but that was expected.

[Look at all that hair!]

Theo had three seizures today.
