From The City Of Lights To The Eternal City: Part V

Wednesday, May 20 {Florence}
Dante lives!

We went first thing to the Galleria Dell Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David.

He is huge and perfect! I could stare at him all day (no pics please... darn!)!

Next, we headed over to the Duomo, Campanile, and Bapistry.

The Duomo is ginormious (is that even a word?) and very colorful.

We went inside the Duomo and walked around. The dome is gorgeous on the inside. It has the last judgment painted on it and looks like something out of Dantes Divine Comedy.

We hiked all the way to the top of the Duomo (463 steps baby!) where we had a great view of Florence.

On our way to see more sites, we stopped and got another gelato : )

On our way to the Uffizi museum we walked though the Piazza Della Signoria where we saw the Fountain of Neptune, David (copy), and other great works of art.

We waited in line for about an hour to get into the Uffizi museum. Time flew by because we were talking to the people who were behind us in line. They had just gotten in from Rome (next stop) and were really nice!

Finally we got into the museum. It had a lot of beautiful pieces of art!

I had forgotten how much I hate Gothic art; I love the architecture, but I hate the art : /

Some of my favorite pieces of work from the museum are Michelangelo’s Holy Family, Botticellis The Birth of Venus, and Botticellis Primavera.

After the museum, we went and ate lunch at a cute little pizza place (my pizza had onions and tuna on it) and it was delicious.

Next, we walked across the Ponte Vecchio and looked at all the jewelry.

We made our way back through Florence towards the Bargello. On our way we passed by Dantes house. Everyone lives him here!

We arrived at the Bargello only to find out Donatello’s David was not there, but in Milan! Since that was the main reason I wanted to go to the museum we decided to pass on it and save our money.

We went back to a large market (San Lorenzo) and bought 2 scarves for myself, a tie for my future husband (if I ever get one), and a scarf for my friend Coleen.

After shopping, we went back to the hotel to rest and plan out our next few days.

At about 11 at night Emily realized that she lost her camera case. We figured it was at the Duomo.

We left the hostel and ran back to the Duomo to look for it (there's nothing like a brisk run through Florence).

Of course, it was gone (it only had a little money and the key to her lock in it) and Emily was sad but luckily her camera was in her bag and not in the case.

On the way back to the hostel we got a waffle with nutella and whipped cream on it. It was so good!

Since Emily’s keys where in her camera case, we had to get a guy at the hostel to come break the lock for us (we were not the first or last to have this happen to us).

A friend and I went to the Bargello and Donatello's David was there but he was undergoing some restoration so he was laying in some struts horizontally and all we could see was his backside!!
